US Senate Holds Hearing on Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities July 12, 2012

Mon, 07/09/2012

HLAA supports ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Part of Marcia Dugan’s legacy as past president of Hearing Loss Association of America (then SHHH) and the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People was her involvement in the ad hoc sessions of the CRPD. She worked with others to ensure that issues related to hearing loss were included in the Convention, particularly in the articles on access, access to communication, education, and health care.

The United States signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009, on the 19th anniversary of the ADA. In May of this year, the White House moved the treaty package to the Senate for its advice and consent to ratify the treaty, making the United States an official party to the treaty. In order to get the treaty to a floor vote of the Senate, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee must hold a hearing and vote the treaty out of committee. Given the election cycle this year there is little time left in the 112th Congress, we must continue the momentum, confirm a hearing date, and move forward with ratification in this Congress!

HLAA will be attending the hearing on July 12, 2012. The hearing is open to the public, and accessible via assistive listening systems. A request has been made to provide captions on the live video feed, found at:

This hearing will be interpreted and also captioned. The web stream will also be captioned.

Urge your Senators to vote Yes! To ratify CRPD.
